It is one of the oldest cities in Europe.

About Pompei:has origins as ancient as those of Rome in the fourth century BC. The intensive cultivation of land and the subsequent export of oil and wine brought wealth and a high standard of living for the population. Pompeii was hit on 5 February 62 AD by a strong earthquake that severely damaged it. Then in the summer of 79 AD (first year of the Emperor Titus) Pompeii was buried under more than 3 meters of ash and pumice which fell unbroken from the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pompeii was declared in 1997 a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The ancient Roman city that had been submerged by the eruption was brought to light during the archaeological excavations. The sudden rain of ash, dust and pumice had crystallized the city and its tragedy preserving it over the centuries.
